All About Clays

Clay are great for use in soap, scrubs, bath fizzies and masks. Each clay has different properities that can be taken advantage of or jused just simply as colorant. It is important to note that all clays are different and can’t be used the same across the board. Below I go over some the more common clays and their specifics, all are sold at Candles and Suppies.

Bentonite Clay – Useful on oily skin. Excellent oil absorbing properties. Thought to remove acne causing toxins from the skin and revitalize tired skin. Very soft clay. Incorporate into formula, amount as desired. Common use levels are 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon per pound of base. If making a face mask, the common use level is 50-75%. Test your final product to insure optimal performance.

Blush Kaolin Clay – Useful on oily, tired and sensitive skin. Thought to help reduce irritation and soothing the skin due to the naturally high levels of iron minerals found in the clay. Creamy soft texture when wet. This clay is a versatile cosmetic ingredient. It can be mixed directly with water or formulated into products such as face masks, creams, shampoos and soap. It allows for the enrichment of formulas with the energy and vitality of their trace elements and dynamic natural colors.

Rose Kaolin Clay – Useful on normal, dry and sensitive skin. Rose Kaolin is a very mild clay that is also good as a thickening agent and hardens bath fizzies. Does not draw oils from the skin.

Slate Kaolin Clay – Useful on oily, tired and sensitive skin. Contains higher levels of iron and magnesium. Thought to help with balancing and acne on the skin due to the naturally high levels of minerals found in the clay. Coarse texture when wet. This clay is a versatile cosmetic ingredient. It can be mixed directly with water or formulated into products such as face masks, creams, shampoos and soap. It allows for the enrichment of formulas with the energy and vitality of their trace elements and dynamic natural colors.

White Kaolin Clay – Useful on normal, dry and sensitive skin. Very mild clay that is good as a thickening agent for soap, face masks and bath fizzies. Does not draw oils from the skin. Hardens Bath Fizzies.

Rhassoul Clay – Useful on oily, tired and sensitive skin. Contains higher levels of magnesium, potassium and calcium that pamper your skin. Commonly used for spa and bath soaks as this clay is thought to be detoxifiying to the skin due to the naturally high levels of minerals found in the clay.

Sea Clay – Useful on oily skin. Thought to remove acne causing toxins from the skin and revitalize tired skin. This is the clay used to make Sea Mud Masks.

Fuller’s Earth Clay – Fuller’s Earth is a natural clay that is popular in soap and skincare products because it’s ability to absorb oil and reduce oiliness from the skin surface. It is thought to tighten the pores thus improving skin texture with a smooth, soft and glowing appearance.

Beige Illite Clay – Useful on oily, tired and sensitive skin. Thought to help purify the skin due to the naturally high levels of the minerals iron, calcium and magnesium found in the clay. Slightly course texture when wet. This clay is a versatile cosmetic ingredient. It can be mixed directly with water or formulated into products such as face masks, creams, shampoos and soap. It allows for the enrichment of formulas with the energy and vitality of their trace elements and dynamic natural colors.

Chocolate Illite Clay – Useful on oily, tired and sensitive skin. Contains higher levels of potassium, calcium, iron and magnesium. Thought to help with anti-aging of the skin due to the naturally high levels of minerals found in the clay. Coarse texture when wet.

Gray Illite Clay – Useful on oily, tired and sensitive skin. Contains higher levels of iron and magnesium. Thought to help the appearance of cellulite on the skin due to the naturally high levels of minerals found in the clay. Smooth and creamy texture when wet.

Orange Illite Clay – Useful on oily, tired and sensitive skin. Contains higher levels of iron, calcium, magnesium. Thought to help oxygenating and detoxifying the skin due to the naturally high levels of minerals found in the clay. Soft smooth texture when wet.

Puddy Illite Clay – Useful on oily, tired and sensitive skin. Contains higher levels of calcium. Thought to be invigorating and toning to the skin due to the naturally high levels of minerals found in the clay. Slightly grainy texture when wet.

Pumpkin Illite Clay – Useful on oily, tired and sensitive skin. Contains higher levels of iron, calcium, magnesium. Thought to help purify the skin due to the naturally high levels of minerals found in the clay. Soft smooth texture when wet.

Tan Illite Clay – Useful on oily, tired and sensitive skin. Thought to be anti-stress and balancing to the skin due to the naturally high levels of potassium found in the clay. Creamy texture when wet.
